First Ring System Around an Asteroid Discovered
Written by Colin Devroe · 26 March 2014
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) held a press conference today to announce that they “have made the surprise discovery that the remote asteroid Chariklo is surrounded by two dense and narrow rings”. Chariklo is a class of asteroid or minor planet. This particular one is way, way out in the Outer Solar System.
Several planets in our solar system have rings; Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Saturn. But no object as small as Chariko have ever been discovered to have rings. Here is a great video from the ESO to explain it.
What is really interesting is the way they discovered the rings so be sure to watch the video.
Update: We have a
mirror download available for you since the ESO website is completely down at the moment.
